Dear TGS Families,

As I near the completion of my third year as Headmaster at Toowoomba Grammar School, I once again contemplate the incredible School community I'm privileged to be a part of. These recent weeks have been a whirlwind of exceptional events, embodying the unity and vibrant spirit that defines our School.

The 2024 Senior Prefects seamlessly embraced their roles while our Year 12s tackled their external exams. Witnessing their graduation and transition into young Old Boys during the Year 12 Final Assembly was a touching moment, while the Formal served as a fitting, emotional close to their journey here at TGS.

Both the Senior and Junior Schools held their Speech Day and Prize Giving Ceremonies earlier this week, celebrating of our boys' achievements in the areas of academics, cultural and sporting pursuits, along with service to the community. These events, complemented by the remarkable performances of our talented musicians, honoured hard work and talent while encouraging continuous growth and excellence.

We now look forward to exciting times ahead, with phase 1 of the School's Master Plan commencing next week with the upgrade of the Aquatic Centre and Junior School carpark. This will prioritise safety and improve the parking experience for our Junior School and Aquatic Centre families. This project is expected to conclude by the end of Term 1, 2024. Subsequently, we'll relocate the J.M. Blaikie Health Centre and commence work on the new Design, Engineering, and Technology facility and the state-of-the-art Agriculture and Industry Centre on Herries Street.

Preparations for Grammar 150 in 2025 are also well underway, and I eagerly anticipate finalising the schedule of activities next year.

Jo and I extend heartfelt gratitude for being a part of this extraordinary community and wish each of you a Merry Christmas and a restful holiday season spent with loved ones. I eagerly await the return of the boys in 2024 for another remarkable year ahead.

Appointments

The following staff have been appointed for the commencement of 2024:

Luke Paffey will be joining the Mathematics Department. Luke has previously served as a Head of Department at Our Lady of the Southern Cross College in Dalby, he has also worked at St Mary’s in Dalby, and St John’s School in Roma. He is experienced in pastoral care, having served as a Boarding Supervisor, and holds a Level 2 Accredited Rugby Union coaching qualification, showcasing his commitment to coaching rugby. Luke holds a Bachelor of Education (Secondary) from QUT.

Ken Elliott has accepted the role of Teacher – Technologies. Presently, Ken is teaching at Faith Lutheran College, instructing in areas such as Industrial and Design Technology, Religion, Food Technology, as well as Automotive and Engineering. Ken brings a wealth of expertise both within and beyond the educational sphere, having previously taught at TAFE colleges and various local councils. Ken’s qualifications include certificates in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Auto Electrician, Diesel Fitting, Mechanical Engineering Maintenance Fitter, and Automotive Air Conditioning and Engineering. In addition, he holds an Advanced Diploma in Ministry and a Bachelor of Education (Secondary). Currently, Ken is pursuing a Graduate Certificate in Psychology.

Bradley Grayson will be joining us as a Teacher of Mathematics. Bradley brings with him valuable experience having previously worked as a teacher at Our Lady of Lourdes College and, more recently, at St Mary’s, where he taught Mathematics, Science, and Digital Technologies. Bradley has previously served as a Boarding Supervisor and coached Cricket and Rugby at TGS from 2019 to 2022. He holds a Bachelor of Secondary Education from USQ.

Appointments - Internal

I am pleased to announce Dr Brett Sawyer has been appointed to the position of Head of Operations. Brett commenced at TGS in 2014 as the School’s E-Learning Co-ordinator. His dedication led to his appointment as Head of Department – Science at the beginning of 2021. Brett will now transition from this role, and I'd like to express gratitude for his exceptional guidance in overseeing the School's expansive Science department. As Head of Department, Brett has been instrumental in reviewing the department’s pedagogy and curriculum and leading his staff in implementation of Explicit Instruction. As an innovative practitioner, he has always been one of the first to trial new pedagogies and support the Science staff with their professional development. With his leadership, Psychology was introduced as a subject and the Agricultural Science program has greatly expanded the opportunities for students. Brett has also been instrumental in providing input to the planning of the Agricultural Technology Centre. We look forward to Brett’s ongoing contributions to the School as Head of Operations in 2024.

Having fulfilled the role of Acting Head of Department – Technologies throughout 2023, Clinton Owen has now formally accepted the position. We look forward to his continued expertise and leadership within the Technologies Department.

We are pleased to announce that Damien Wrench has accepted the role of Assistant Head of Department – Mathematics and will start in this role in January 2024. Damien joined TGS in August of last year and has made a significant contribution to the Mathematics Department and TGS.

Ben Schuhmacher has been appointed to the position of Head of House Day – Mackintosh following Andrew McKinnon’s resignation, starting in January 2024. Ben was the Assistant Head of House Day – Groom however will relinquish this role to assume the Head of House Mackintosh role. We warmly welcome Ben to his new position.

Resignations

Nicholas Hopson has placed his resignation from his position as Senior School Teacher, to be effective at the end of this year. He commenced at TGS in January 2020 as a Teacher of Economics and English and has recently accepted an offer from the University of Wollongong for a position in the Doctor of Medicine program in 2024. We extend our gratitude for Nick's contributions over the past four years and wish him resounding success in his future endeavours.

After a lengthy tenure of ten years and four months dedicated to the TGS Community, David Enfantie has announced his resignation from the position of Head of Sport - Rugby. Throughout his time at the School, David has held several significant positions, including Boarding Supervisor, Aquatic Centre Manager, Acting Director of Sport and Activities, and Head of Sport – Rugby, along with coaching the 1st XV for an eight-year period. His leadership has been instrumental in the seamless transitions between his various roles, and he has demonstrated exceptional skill in managing sports teams and guiding our TGS students in various sporting endeavours. David has accepted a new position at Townsville Grammar School, and we extend our heartfelt best wishes to him and his family for their relocation to north Queensland.

After 11 years of service to TGS, Melissa Buchholz has made the decision to resign from her role as Music Tutor at the end of 2023. Melissa's unwavering dedication to teaching in the classroom, as a Music Tutor, and TGS Accompanist, has significantly enriched our School's musical landscape. Throughout her time here, Melissa's contributions extended beyond the classroom. She played a vital role in preparing students for eisteddfods, music examinations, and various musical productions. Many of you may be aware that Melissa was selected to be an examining panel member for Trinity College London. Recently, she returned from a three-week excursion to New Zealand where she assessed students across the South Island. Melissa is returning to New Zealand in two weeks to continue examining. This recognition is a testament to Melissa's expertise and dedication in the field of music education.

On Monday, 27 November, the Herries Street carpark that services the Junior School and the Aquatic Centre will close. It is expected to reopen at the end of Term 1, 2024.

We have created a dedicated building work updates page on our website to keep you up to date with the latest information on parking, pedestrian access, drop off points, etc. This page will be regularly updated and is also accessible via the Quicklinks menu on the TGS website and via the TGS App.

As advised in our recent Masterplan communications, we are upgrading this carpark to prioritise the safety of children and families, to ease traffic congestions, and enhance pedestrian flow and parking.

Temporary car parking for Learn To Swim families will be available on Trustees Oval. Pedestrian access to the pool will be via the new ramp on Herries Street.

Prior to school commencing in 2024, we will communicate arrangements for Junior School drop off and pick up points.

As the year draws to a close, I can’t believe how quickly the semester has flown. Over the last few weeks, the Year 12s have finalised their plans, at this stage, for life beyond school.

ATAR and Offer Rounds

ATARs will be released on Friday, 15 December and the boys will be notified via SMS. There will be an offer round for QTAC applicants on Thursday, 21 December and the major offer round will be Thursday, 11 January. The interstate offer rounds will also be in January. Next Step Destination Survey

The annual Next Step survey provides comprehensive information about the employment, study and life choices of Year 12 completers approximately six months after completing Year 12 in Queensland Government, Catholic and Independent schools.

The Next Step surveys provide valuable information to improve the services available to school leavers in the future. The surveys collect information about what school leavers are doing in the year after leaving school.

Past students will receive a letter from the Queensland Minister for Education containing information and login details to participate in the survey online. If they do not complete the survey online, they will be phoned by the Queensland Government Statistician's Office and offered the option to complete the survey over the phone.

The Year 12 Completers survey is conducted between March and June each year. We encourage our school leavers to participate in this survey as it assists with planning for the future. Further information can be found on the website: Information for participants

Year 10 Work Experience 2024

In Week 7, we spoke with the Year 9 boys about the work experience program running during activities week in Term 1 next year. We encourage the boys to start looking for possible work experience opportunities over the holidays to have a placement sorted before school resumes. All Year 9 parents will have received an email outlining the process for applying, with the 2024 Work Experience Handbook attached. We have enjoyed a tremendous finish to 2023. The final few weeks of Term 4 are notoriously full with learning assessments, co-curricular activities, Twilight rehearsals, Orientation days, farewells and ceremonies of one kind or another. It’s certainly been busy, but an enjoyable type of busy. Everyone can move into the break feeling very proud of their efforts in 2023.

Year 6 Dinner

On Friday, 10 November our Year 6s celebrated the culmination of their Junior School journey with a dinner together with their families in our Junior School Hall. This was a lovely moment to recognise the efforts the whole family has made throughout their Junior School years with a ‘graduation’ signifying their readiness for the next stage in their education in moving to the Senior School.

Twilight Concert

Held on Old Boys’ Memorial Oval on Friday, 17 November, Twilight was a fitting finale to the year where every class performs an item for the Junior School community. The energy, creative costumes, glow sticks and fanfare from the crowd provided an exciting atmosphere for everyone to enjoy. Thank you to the class teachers and boys for your tremendous efforts in rehearsals to deliver the amazing performances we all enjoyed on the night. A sincere thanks also to the Junior School Supporters' Group for your generous organisation of the pizza meals and Wheelbarrow of Cheer raffles, they made for a perfect evening.

Orientation Day

On Monday, 20 November, all the classes moved up a year level for the morning, seeing their classroom and meeting their teacher for 2024. This was a nice opportunity to become a little familiar with the new surrounds before the break. Our Learning Support team has also been making contact with families of boys with learning plans to provide further assistance in supporting a confident start to the new year. If you feel your son would benefit from an early connection point with their class teacher before the start of term, please feel comfortable making contact with Mrs Chantelle Bauer – Deputy Head of Junior School Teaching and Learning at c.bauer@twgs.qld.edu.au. A short visit to the classroom and a quick chat before school starts is a helpful way to begin the year for some students.

Speech Day

On Thursday, 23 November the Junior School Speech Day was held. This event acknowledged the academic achievements of the year. Every student can be extremely proud of the progress in their learning and personal development this year, and Speech Day affords us the opportunity to do this as a community. The winner of the House Shield was also announced, and for 2023 this was Taylor House. Also presented were our Junior School leaders for 2024 during a symbolic handover between the current leaders where they wished them well for the year ahead.

I would like to sign-off by offering my sincere thanks to our Junior School community for the immense support, kindness, encouragement and commitment for all the activities, events and programs we make available for students and families to enjoy. Whether it's part of sport, music, special events and activities, our Junior School is always well-represented with keen students and wonderfully supportive families. 2024 promises to be an exciting one for Toowoomba Grammar Junior School as we work towards bringing to life the programs and opportunities of the recently shared masterplan build which begins over this summer holiday.

As the holiday season approaches, nurturing a passion for reading remains a cornerstone of academic growth and personal development. Here are some valuable tips to encourage and sustain their reading journey during this time:

• Create a Reading Oasis - Establish a cozy reading nook at home filled with an assortment of captivating books. Encourage exploration by allowing your child to select books aligned with their interests. By fostering a comfortable and inviting space, you'll stimulate curiosity and motivation to delve into the pages.
• Family Reading Rituals - Incorporate reading into daily family routines. Allocate time for a 'reading hour' where everyone engages in their chosen book. This not only sets a positive example but also fosters a shared love for storytelling and learning within the family unit.
• Explore Diverse Reading Materials - Encourage a variety of reading materials beyond books such as comics, newspapers, magazines and online articles. Diversity in reading materials broadens perspectives, enriches vocabulary and keeps young minds engaged.

Instrumental Tuition 2024

If your son is currently enrolled in private music tuition, his enrolment will automatically roll over into 2024. Should you wish to enrol your son to commence instrumental or singing lessons in 2024, please complete the enrolment form: 2024 - Junior School Music Tuition Request Form

Return of School Hire Instruments

All School hire instruments should be returned by the end of Week 7, or after your son’s final lesson. Boys who require their instruments for Speech Day performances (Concert Band, Jazz Band and Chamber Strings) should return them to the Music Room immediately after Speech Day. All instruments must be given directly to Mrs Dixon in the Music Room to ensure they have been marked off. Instruments will be serviced over the Christmas holidays and parents will receive notification when their son’s instrument can be collected during the holidays. If you are away, your son can collect his instrument at the start of the school year.

Year 3 and Year 5 Performance Program 2024

I invite all current Year 2s and current Year 4s to continue on their instrument next year as part of our Year 3 Strings Performance Program and Year 5 Performance Program. The School offers a subsidised rate for instrumental lessons for boys who choose to continue on their current Year 2 or Year 4 instrument. Year 6 Musicians’ Lunch

On Tuesday, 14 November all current Year 6 ensemble members were invited to a Year 6 Musicians’ lunch. These Year 6 musicians’ must be congratulated for their involvement in the Music program this year. I will greatly miss our current Year 6s and wish them all the very best for next year. I strongly encourage all of them to continue their involvement in the Music program beyond Year 6.

As we farewell our senior boys and start to wrap up 2023, I wanted to take a quick moment to thank everyone for their support this year. Thank you to all of the parents and guardians who have helped us feed the masses at our SOTA barbeques and for your ongoing support for all of our boys in performing arts.

SOTA thanks the Grammar Art Show Committee for their very generous provision of $5000 which will go towards supporting the Junior School musical in 2024. Very exciting!

A heartfelt thank you to Linda Lester who has finished up in her role as President. Her passion for the arts has shone through in all of her work with SOTA over the years and we have been so lucky to have her. We also farewell and thank our Treasurer, Viv McCollom, for her many years of volunteering and support.

I extend a warm congratulations to Simon Fleming who now steps into the President role and I look forward to what 2024 will bring.

Last, but not least, thank you to Mark Chalmers and his Performing Arts team. It has been a non-stop year for them, but they work tirelessly behind the scenes to give our boys every opportunity and for that we are truly grateful.

Pre-season Football Trial Games 2024

Pre-season commences in Term 1 with grading trials followed by early morning training commencing from the week beginning 19 February. In general, all players are welcome to attend pre-season training with an expectation that all boys aspiring to play in A Teams will attend all sessions. Where possible, the School will arrange some pre-season games with other schools and potentially some community clubs. C/D squads will play against each other for pre-season games.

Football Queensland – Regional Schools Futsal Gala days

29-3 April - 13, 15 and Open boys (selected teams across the week) to be played at Gatton Indoor facility (Head of Football to select teams).

Teams who progress to the FQ School Futsal Championships will play at the Nissan Arena 19-21 June 2024. A Football Australia, National School Futsal championships has now been scheduled for 18-20 November at Coomera, Gold Coast.

Queensland School Futsal Cups

Teams from U12/U14/U16 may be selected to participate in Queensland School Futsal Cup at Coomera Indoors Sports. U16 Boys 17-18 June, U14 Boys 10-11 September, U12 Boys 11-12 November.

Pre-Season – Blazers Football Holiday Camp

4-5 April 2024 for boys in Years 5-11.

This Football Camp is ideal preparation for boys looking to be GPS season ready. Boys will be asked to register and a fee will be charged.

The Southport School – Football Tournament

8-12 April 2024

Teams from across Australia and New Zealand will gather at the Gold Coast for a mini-tournament during the Easter School Holidays.

The School is working to include teams from U12 through to U18s. The tournament has a rest day on the 11 April. All aspiring GPS 'A' Team players are requested to attend. Boys from across the football program are invited to join in this tournament subject to their availability.

Please note that the 1st XI squad will be boarding throughout this week. It will be necessary for all other age groups to be hosted by their parents (please consider finding some accommodation now if you intend on bringing your son to this event).

Boys outside of the 1st XI squad may apply to board where it is impossible for them to attend with their parents. Please contact the Head of Football via email on n.fanning@twsg.qld.edu.au. Boarding fees are estimated to be $450 for the week.

TSSS (Toowoomba School Sport Association) and Darling Downs Trials 2024

Toowoomba Secondary School Sport provides opportunities for boys to participate in Zone Teams if they are seeking selection into the Darling Downs Representative Football program. By the very nature of the Toowoomba Range Zone, TGS is required to grade and select restricted numbers of players for the TSSS trials. In 2023, the School was restricted to just six attendees for all TSS Trials. EOI (Expressions of Interest) will be sent to boys who would like to participate in the Darling Downs Representative process in 2024.

TSSS 10-12 Trials – Identified players will be invited to attend trials leading towards DD selections. At present, these trials are scheduled to occur on Wednesday, 17 April 2024 (1:00pm). Toowoomba Range Zone will then play in games at DD trials in Stanthorpe on Monday, 27 May. Selected boys will be expected to play in final selection trials on Tuesday, 28 May when the DD team is announced.

TSSS 13-16 Trials – Identified players will be invited to attend trials leading towards Toowoomba Range Zone selections. At present, these trials are scheduled to occur 21 February 2024. A team representing the Toowoomba Range Zone will then play in trial games in Toowoomba on Thursday, 7 March when the final DD team is announced.

TSSS 17-19 Trials – Identified players will be invited to attend trials leading towards Toowoomba Range Zone selections. At present, these trials are scheduled to occur on 21 February 2024. A team representing the Toowoomba Range Zone will then play in selection trials in Toowoomba on Thursday, 7 March when the final DD team is announced.

Bill Turner Cup 2024

The Bill Turner Cup is a school-based competition involving around 850 schools across eastern Australia. The cup is a knockout competition for players who are 15 years and under. TGS has a proud history of playing and succeeding in this competition. Darling Downs will host a cluster day on the 22 April 2024. Semi-finals and finals are played locally and the winning teams progress to play-offs and finals against teams in Brisbane. TGS were the DD Champions in 2023 and left the tournament at the semi-final stage against Ipswich Grammar School. Eligible boys from Years 10/9/8 will be selected to form the Bill Turner Squad in 2024.

1st XI Team Squad – Season Launch

18th April 2024, 6:00pm – Burke and Wills Hotel.

The 1st XI squad for the 2024 season will be finalised and formally announced at the beginning of Term 2. All selected 1st XI squad players, their parents and families are invited to the season launch for drinks and nibbles. This official opening will feature an address by the Head Coach, Mr Mike Mulvey. All players will be presented with their 2024 season shirts. The captain of the 1st XI will provide an update of the team's hopes and expectations for the coming season (venue to be confirmed).

Mini World Cup – Inverell, 23 – 28 September 2024.

Following a gap in attendance in 2023, TGS will once again enter some teams into the annual mini-world cup tournament which occurs from 23-28 September in Inverell. Chris McLeod will return to TGS next year and we have committed to taking a few teams from various age groups back to the tournament.

Expressions of interest will be sent out before the end of Term 1. Families considering travelling should commence their accommodation search now as this tournament is expected to grow rapidly following the successful relocation to NSW.

Many senior players from the School are usually selected for the prestigious 28 Day, Germany Football Tour which occurs in the following June/July School Holidays (2025).

The tournament coordinators are also seeking to select a travelling U14, team to visit Japan in 2025.

UK Football Tour, November – December 2024

TGS football will once again open expressions of interest from boys in Years 9-11 to tour England and Scotland. The tour will depart on the 29 November 2024 for a 16-day football experience. EOIs will open shortly and those interested will be asked to submit a $300 deposit to secure a place on this tour. Highlights of the tour will include tours to iconic stadiums in London, Manchester, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Boys will attend professional games and enjoy a magnificent football experience.

Football Supporters' Group Race Day 2024

Continuing with our standout fundraising event, TGS Football Supporters' Group once again invites you to be a part of a stunning day out at Clifford Park.

Next year will see the return of our award-winning band, 'SPECIAL GUEST' who we have used extensively in previous years.

The Football Supporters' Group race day is our main fundraising event for the football program to reduce costs for all players who participate in camps, tours or events.

The group of parents are mobilised to assist the football program in enhancing the football experience for the boys whilst they are at the school. This has been a busy term for the boarders at TGS. Many have used the absence of GPS sport on a Saturday to spend some extra time at home on leave, helping on their farms. Up until this week, most of that help had been feeding cattle and I’ve been pleased to hear that many of our families have got some respite with the drenching we’ve had this week.

The highlight of our Activities Program this term has been the trip to Wet n Wild. It was a perfect day with our boarders enjoying the rides. It’s an opportunity that they don’t get at home and it will continue to be popular in years to come. I have been pleased to introduce more opportunities for our boarders to play golf this term. For the older boys in particular, it is a great activity that promotes wellbeing. Additionally, we’ve given our boarders opportunities to develop their skills and gain qualifications through activities such as a strapping course, as well as ten boys who got their boat license.

The last couple of weeks have witnessed our boarding community bid farewell to the Seniors of 2023. This group has left a legacy in the manner through which they have supported the boys in the younger year groups. At the Graduation Assembly on Old Boys' Memorial Oval, I felt that our Senior Boarding Prefect, Pat Savill, gave an outstanding speech that surmised the boarding journey perfectly. I wish all of the 2023 Seniors the very best for the future.

In this final week of the 2023 academic year, we were able to welcome our 2024 new boarders. This gave them the opportunity to sleep over and experience a night in boarding before they join us full time next year. Beginning on Sunday afternoon, there were some anxious young men and parents who gathered at the Pavilion but by the pick-up on Monday afternoon there were plenty of smiles and all of the boarders drove away from TGS excited about coming back and beginning their boarding journey.

I wish all members of the TGS boarding community safe passage home for the Christmas holidays. May the break be filled with laughter and happiness, and I look forward to welcoming you all back in the New Year.

Sponsorship opportunities for the 2024 Grammar Art Show are now available.

Attracting over 3,500 visitors, the Art Show is one of Toowoomba's signature events that also enjoys a global following. Sponsorship provides great exposure.
