I extend my warmest wishes to both returning and new families at Toowoomba Grammar School. We are excited to have our students back on campus and look forward to another successful year of academic excellence and personal growth. This time last year saw the delay of school due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I am very pleased we are in a different situation and once again the School has come alive with the return of our boys.
Last week, we celebrated the outstanding success of our 2022 Year 12 school leavers at the Scholars’ Assembly and it was lovely to welcome back many boys and their parents to this special event. The assembly provided an opportunity to acknowledge the intellectual commitment each boy has made to their studies and in doing so we celebrated our next generation of thinkers. We are proud to announce that one of our students, Darcy Schmidt, received an ATAR over 99 and 35% of our boys received an ATAR over 90. We are also delighted to report that the majority of our boys received their first preference offer to a tertiary course.
The results of 2022 were outstanding, and I congratulate all boys on their achievements. Their results are testament to the diligence, commitment, and application they showed to their studies throughout the year, and also the dedication of our teachers and staff. These results are even more impressive given the disruptions of COVID-19 and Influenza in Terms 1 and 2 in particular. In this regard, what they have achieved is even more impressive. A 2022 Median ATAR of 87.6 is simply outstanding and is a significant improvement on the 84.1 produced by the cohort of 2021. The success of the 2022 cohort is our success as a School and in addition to the outstanding results produced by some, it was great to note that many others who have produced their best results through hard work and application. This outcome is equally as impressive, and I would like to acknowledge all who set ambitious goals and who did all that they could to achieve them.
We welcome many new staff to TGS in 2023, and this is reported in the Staffing Updates section of The Blue and Gold. They are teachers of the highest calibre, selected from a rigorous recruitment process to ensure that we continue to provide our students with the best possible education. Our new staff bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to our School, and we are excited to have them join our community. They have already begun to make a positive impact on our students, and we are confident that they will be valuable assets to our School for many years to come.
Over the holiday period, we have undertaken a number of important works, including the refurbishment of the Purves classrooms, updates to the Dining Room entry, new counsellor offices, and renovation works on the School House ground floor to include a more central student services area.
The TGS on Tour program will continue in 2023 visiting regional areas, as far north as Darwin and south to Gunnedah. I along with a number of staff are looking forward to connecting with our regional families.
As I commence my third year as Headmaster of this wonderful school, I am filled with a deep sense of pride and gratitude. The past two years have been a time of growth and change, and I am honoured to have been a part of the Toowoomba Grammar School community. I am continually inspired by the dedication and hard work of our staff and students, and I am excited for the many opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. I am committed to working together to provide the best possible education for our boys and I look forward to continue to serve as Headmaster of this great School.
Kind regards, Dr John C Kinniburgh Headmaster

2022 Basketball Premiership Team Officially Recognised
A special Assembly was held yesterday to formally recognise the 2022 1st V Basketball Premiership team.
It is a time-honoured tradition for the TGS Old Boys' Association to present the players of a Premiership team with special caps as recognition of their feat.
TGSOBA President, Mr Mark Creedon (1973-77) and TGSOBA committee member, Mr Nicholas Hess (1997-2001) had the honours yesterday and told the assembly that although a Premiership can appear as only a significant event for current students, it is a treasured moment for the Old Boys, many of whom have enjoyed GPS competitions with their mates and never experienced a Premiership.
Congratulations again to our 2022 1st V Basketball Premiers, and thank you to the TGSOBA for continuing this wonderful cap presentation tradition.

“I was so happy yesterday afternoon, my son came home with dirty clothes and hat, blue paint all over his hands, happy and exhausted.” Early Years parent.
This quote so beautifully captures the fullness of a day for our youngest students, and the sense of adventure a day at TGS brings.
Last week, a teacher forwarded me this quote from a parent sharing how delighted they were with the start of the year, the happiness of their son and themselves. This is wonderful of course, and we wish everyone the same sense of excitement and adventure for the year ahead.
On the first day of school this year, I shared with students and parents at our assembly a few passages from a favourite book of mine Oh the places you’ll go by Dr Seuss. I suspect most people have read this children’s classic at some point, but if that was a while ago its worth a re-visit. The aspect I particularly enjoy is the great adventure this young character goes on throughout the story. There are moments of joy, curiosity, confusion, disappointment, hope, courage and excitement to name a few, all the elements of a great adventure. I’d like to think that school is a great adventure. Each day is filled with exciting experiences, new learnings, challenges to overcome, celebrations to be enjoyed and friends to share them with.
Last week we welcomed our youngest students to their first day of Prep. Please take a moment to enjoy the article from Prep teachers Mrs Grills and Mrs O’Connell, sharing stories and photographs of their first day, these are important milestone moments to celebrate. I would also like to draw your attention to the article written by Mrs Chantelle Bauer, Deputy Head of Junior School - Teaching and Learning. Mrs Bauer has an exceptional background in curriculum development and has shared some key focus areas in the Junior School for the year ahead.
Yesterday, we formally inducted our student leaders in Year 6 at assembly. These students will lead their House groups and the Junior School community across a range of portfolios. We were delighted to have three Senior School Prefects, Will Anderson, Jeremy Zuyderwyk, and Shafiuddin Aanan join and present at the Leaders’ Induction Assembly. Will Anderson shared his own experiences of the Junior School and his reflections on how leadership has shaped him as a person. Our thanks again to Will, Jeremy and Shafiuddin for sharing their time and thoughts with us at this occasion.
Today we are looking forward to our first House Carnival of the year with the Under 9 – 12 Swimming Carnival at the P.E. Hauser Aquatic Centre. This will be a superb opportunity for the boys to demonstrate their House spirit, and families to enjoy watching their sons swim.
And lastly, my sincere thanks to our parent community for attending the class information evening and welcome function last Friday, 27 January. The relationship between home and school, parent and teacher, is such a valuable one for your son throughout the year, thank you for taking the time to form that connection for 2023.
My sincere best wishes for the year ahead. May it be an exciting one for you and your family and be filled with a sense of adventure.
Warmest regards and appreciation,
Ken Raven Head of Junior School
From the Deputy Head of Junior School (Teaching and Learning)
It is with great excitement that I introduce myself as the new Junior School Deputy Head of Teaching and Learning at Toowoomba Grammar School. I am honoured to be joining such a distinguished institution and look forward to working with the students, parents, and wider community to ensure that our students receive the best possible education.
I am privileged to serve the families of Toowoomba Grammar School, where I am dedicated to supporting the educational development and success of our students. With over 15 years of experience in education, I have a deep understanding of the needs of students and the importance of fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment. I am committed to working closely with our staff and families to provide the best possible education for our boys and to build a community that values excellence, integrity, and respect.
At our School, we are committed to ensuring that every student reaches their full potential. One of the ways we will do this is by setting learning goals with each student, and regularly assessing their progress towards those goals. This allows us to identify areas where a student may need extra support, and to tailor our instruction to meet their individual needs. Additionally, we believe in using data purposefully, by analysing student performance data and using it to inform our instruction and make adjustments to our curriculum and teaching methods. This data-driven approach helps us to identify and address any gaps in student learning, and to ensure that every student is making progress towards their learning goals. As parents, your involvement in this process is crucial, and we encourage you to stay informed about your child's progress and to communicate with their teachers regularly.
As the Deputy Head of Teaching and Learning, I am committed to promoting academic rigour at Toowoomba Grammar School. I believe that providing challenging and engaging learning opportunities will help our boys develop critical thinking skills, problem solving abilities and become independent learners. I will be working with staff to implement programs and initiatives that will help students reach their full potential and succeed in a competitive academic environment.
Chantelle Bauer Deputy Head of Junior School (Teaching & Learning)
From the Deputy Head of Junior School
Welcome to a new and exciting school year. I have enjoyed meeting the new boys and some of their parents and I look forward to meeting more in the coming weeks.
I hope you gained some valuable information at the Parent Information evening last Friday and you now have a greater insight into how your son’s classroom operates, the program, timetable, expectations and obviously got to know his teacher a little more. Thank you for your attendance and I thank the dedicated teachers for the time taken to present an accurate picture of their classroom.
At this time of year, it is important to ensure that your son has all his school property labelled. This includes his school uniform and his classroom materials. Correct labelling will enable early recovery of such items if they become lost. The location of the lost property box is just outside the Staff Room. Your son will be reminded that presentation of his school uniform is also important. As stated in the Student Handbook, the school uniform is as follows: TGS ‘Blues’ – TGS shirt, shorts, socks (with garters), black leather shoes and TGS hat (Akubra – Years 4 to 6; Sports hat – Prep to Year 3). Please encourage your sons to regularly polish their black school shoes.
Boys are expected to be ready for class by 8:25am and may be collected at 3:10pm. Staff will be on duty in the playground at 8:00am. The arrival of boys before 8:00am is not encouraged but if this occurs, they must sit on the bench seats and stairs outside the Head of the Junior School’s office until a staff member starts the morning duty. First Day of Prep
Starting Prep is such an exciting time. It was so lovely to welcome our youngest TGS boys and their families to our community. They have enjoyed settling into their classrooms and adapting to their new routine. The boys have engaged in various classroom and specialist’s lesson. Some of these lessons included literacy activities, mathematics, art, library, music, and PE. The boys have enjoyed getting to know each other both in the classroom and the playground. We look forward to a positive year with our Prep boys.

Junior School Music News
Welcome to 2023! It's been wonderful to see the boys return to school, and I look forward to the opportunity to work with your son in both classroom music and the co-curricular music program. If you have any questions regarding the music program this year, or if you are new to the School and would like to discuss what music opportunities are available for your son then please do not hesitate to contact me via email (k.dixon@twgs.qld.edu.au).
Instrumental tuition If you would like to enrol your son in instrumental tuition you will need to complete the online “2023 Music Tuition Enrolment Form” which can be found through the parent portal. If you have any enquiries regarding instrumental music tuition or lesson times, please contact our Arts Assistant, Mrs Rebecca Westman by phone on 4687 2542, or via email at r.westman@twgs.qld.edu.au or music@twgs.qld.edu.au.
Ensemble Schedule 2023 Below is the ensemble schedule for 2023. Ensemble rehearsals will commence in Week 2, Term 1. All ensembles listed below are for boys in Years 4 to 6 unless specified. Please note that ensembles are not considered as clubs and therefore rehearse every week of the year during term time.
Please find below a brief outline of each ensemble. If you have questions regarding a specific ensemble, please do not hesitate to contact me, or you may contact the conductor of that ensemble.
Tribe and Tribe Junior Tribe and Tribe Junior are choirs open to all boys who enjoy music and singing. Tribe is for boys in Years 4 to 6, and Tribe Junior is open to all boys in Years 2 and 3. All boys who enjoy singing are encouraged to attend rehearsals, however, it is important to know that if your son joins an ensemble, it is expected he shows commitment and attends all weekly rehearsals. Boys who are interested in joining should simply show up at the Junior School hall for our scheduled rehearsals and their name will be added to the roll. Please email Mrs Dixon with any questions regarding Tribe or Tribe Junior.
Introductory Band The Introductory Band will be conducted by Ms Janelle Fletcher. If your son was involved in Introductory Band last year, I encourage him to continue his involvement (there may be some boys who were in Intro Band last year who may be invited to join Concert Band). Introductory Band focuses on teaching the foundation skills of playing in an ensemble and is the training for Concert Band. Boys who have been taking individual lessons on an instrument for at least two terms are welcome to join this ensemble.
Concert Band The Concert Band will be conducted by Mrs Kellie Dixon. This ensemble performs regularly both at School assemblies, academic ceremonies and at local performance opportunities. The Concert Band is designed for more advanced players who are taking individual lessons on their Brass or Woodwind instrument. Boys who take private lessons on Strings, Piano or Percussion are also welcome to discuss joining the Concert Band as percussionists.
Chamber Wind Ensemble The Chamber Wind Ensemble will be conducted by Mrs Fiona Hamill. This is a small ensemble for flute and clarinet players who have been taking private lessons for a minimum of 12 months. The ensemble focuses on individual part playing and developing the woodwind tone as a small group.
Jazz Band The Jazz Band will be conducted by Mr Mark Chalmers. The Jazz Band perform a variety of Jazz and Stage Band repertoire. Boys who have been learning the saxophone or any brass instrument for a minimum of 12 months, and boys who have taken individual lessons on piano or drum-kit for at least 2-3 years are welcome to discuss joining the Jazz Band.
String Ensemble The String Ensemble will be conducted by Ms Teresa Brix. String Ensemble is open to boys who have taking private lessons on their string instrument for more than 12 months.
Chamber Strings Boys who are at an appropriate standard will be invited to join Chamber Strings.
Introductory String Ensemble Introductory String Ensemble will be conducted by Ms Teresa Brix and rehearses for 30 minutes each week. All boys who are participating in the Year 3 String Performance Program are expected to attend weekly rehearsals. Other boys who are at a beginner level may also attend after discussion with Mrs Dixon and Ms Brix.
Percussion Ensemble Percussion Ensemble will be conducted by Mrs Kellie Dixon. Boys who have piano lessons may like to consider joining, however, this is not a pre-requisite. Boys need to have a good sense of beat and rhythm and be willing to work hard during rehearsals and learn their individual part. Boys who enjoy performing on both tuned and untuned percussion are welcome to discuss joining this ensemble with Mrs Dixon. Percussion Ensemble welcomes new members; however, boys will join on a trial basis to prove they have the skills and ability to perform the repertoire.
Junior School Orchestra The Junior School Orchestra program will run through Terms 2 and 3 for a 6 to 8 week period leading up to the Toowoomba Eisteddfod. Further information regarding rehearsals will be sent home to relevant boys during Term 2.
Instrumental immersion programs
Year 2 strings All Year 2 boys will be learning a string instrument this year and lessons will take place on Tuesdays. The Year 2 string program will be run by Ms Teresa Brix. A note with more details will be sent home in the coming weeks.
Year 4 band All boys in Year 4 will learn an instrument from either the woodwind, brass or percussion family this year and lessons will take place on Thursdays. Boys will be given the opportunity to try all instruments so we can ascertain which instrument your son is best suited to. Parents will be notified of their son’s instrumental allocation after this has been completed and instruments will be distributed the following Thursday. The exact date of distribution will be confirmed in a note which will be sent home in the coming weeks.
If you have any questions regarding the instrumental immersion programs at the School, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Assembly performances Each week at assembly we endeavour to feature two musical performances. If your son is receiving private instrumental or singing tuition and would like to take advantage of a performance opportunity, please contact me.

From the Junior School Library
Welcome back to all our students, staff and families, but an especially big welcome to all the new members of our School community.
Our library is open 8:00am to 4:00pm on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Students can visit the library before school, at lunchtime and after school to borrow or return books, do homework, draw, read or play chess. Families are more than welcome before and after school to return and borrow books. We invite all members of our School community to visit us in the library.
Junior School boys receive library lessons from Prep to Year 6 and have one timetabled lesson a week. Please check with your boys on their library day to see what they have borrowed and share in their reading journey. At the Junior School, we encourage the boys to become regular borrowers and to develop a life-long passion for reading.
I look forward to a new term and seeing our school community enjoy our beautiful library.

From the Junior School Supporters' Group
After a long summer break, Term 1 has finally started which can be a double-edged sword! The kids are out of the house, hopefully enjoying catching up with old friends and making new ones at school. At the same time, we are confronted with the harsh realities of lunchbox-packing and uniform ironing (or at least, washing and putting away!) I hope these early weeks go smoothly for all boys and parents as we find our groove.
For all families new to the Junior School, especially Preppies, I hope you have a great start to the year. There are many new adventures to be had, new people to meet, and memories to be made, especially for our youngest boys.
On behalf of the Supporters' Group and School families, I would like to welcome Mr Ken Raven, Mrs Chantelle Bauer and their families to our School community. We look forward to working with you to support our boys’ education. Thank you also to all returning staff members for the energy and passion that you put into your work every day – you are a huge part of why we choose TGS.
Ladies Soiree JSSG will be hosting our Ladies Soiree on Saturday, 18 February at Impressions on Scott. You will soon receive an email invitation and bookings will be taken via the Parent Lounge.
JSSG meeting We have our first committee meeting of the year on Monday, 13 February at 6:00pm in the staffroom. We are always happy to see new faces so please come along.

Sport and Activities
Sport & Activities App
The TGS Sport and Activities Department has launched a new communication strategy for students, parents and coaching staff, designed to centralise the use of the TGS App for all sports and activities information.
Sport and Activities information has moved from Parent Lounge and Student Café to Clipboard, an extracurricular activities management system designed specifically for schools to enhance and simplify the vast array of communications posted by the Sport and Activities Department for boys from Prep to Year 12.
Clipboard is integrated with the TGS App and does not require parents to create separate logins, passwords, etc. Parents log in using the same details they use for Parent Lounge.
The benefits include:
• Centralising all information • Creating personalised notifications for each student and family • Decreasing the volume of emails • Detailing weekly schedules accurately and earlier (training, fixtures, rehearsals, bus times, locations, performances, etc) • Mobile friendly • Accurate student calendars that have the capabilities of syncing to family calendars • Sport and Activities sign ups
Fixtures for each Saturday will be uploaded as soon as they are confirmed. Team selections will be finalised by Friday morning, and it is recommended that all parents and boys recheck their teams in case any changes have been made from the previous week.
Toowoomba Grammar School Army Cadets will be holding an Open Day on Sunday, 5 February on Old Boys' Memorial Oval and the TGS Pavilion.
The Cadet Open Day is an excellent way to learn more about what Army Cadets is and how it has become the leading youth development program in Australia. TGS Army Cadets seek to build key attributes within the boys by instilling a sense of identity, purpose, and belonging while proudly sharing the character and values of the Australian Army.
The Army Cadet Program develops leadership, fosters teamwork and encourages the values of service and self-discipline, as well as building friendships across the School.
Come and see what you can achieve within the TGS Army Cadets.
OPEN DAY 2023
Date: Sunday, 5 February 2023

National Open Water Championships, Western Australia
Congratulations to Year 9 student, Lachlan Parker on his success in the boys 14 years 5km swim held at the National Open Water Championships in Busselton last week.
Lachlan swam strongly to secure a silver medal.
TGS Volleyball
A very warm welcome to all new and returning families to TGS in 2023!
We have an exciting term of Volleyball ahead of us; our GPS Volleyball season officially started on Saturday, 28 January against St Joseph's College, Gregory Terrace.
Round 1 saw our Years 5 to 8 teams playing at home, and our Years 9 to 1st VI playing away.
Congratulations to the following teams on their Round 1 wins:
1st VI, 2nd VI, 11C, 9A, 9C, 9D, 8A
A number of our teams had some close games as well; however, no matter the end result, all boys should be very proud of their Round 1 efforts.
Round 2 will see us take on Brisbane State High School this Saturday, 4 February. We would love to see as many people as possible at TGS to support our Volleyballers!
Volleyball Supporters' Group Raffle
A big part of our program here at TGS is our Volleyball Supporters' Group. The purpose of the Volleyball Supporters’ Group is to friend raise and fund raise through various initiatives, with the aim of benefiting all boys in the TGS Volleyball program.
One of their fundraising initiatives for Term 1 is a Wheelbarrow Raffle. If you, or anyone you know, would like to donate an item to this raffle it would be greatly appreciated. We're looking for all types of donations, big or small.
We hope you can help! All money raised will go back into the Volleyball program to benefit the boys.
Raffle donations can be handed in to the Sport and Activities Office during the week, or to our Volleyball Supporters' Group on game days.
Volleyball Supporters' Group Meeting
Our next Volleyball Supporters' Group Meeting will take place on Tuesday, 7 February at 7:00pm via Microsoft Teams. Our Volleyball program and the Volleyball Supporters' Group would love to see as many parents as possible attend next Tuesday’s meeting. Please find the link to the meeting below:
TGS has a strong and proud tradition in Debating. This year, for the first time, we have entered the GPS competition. On Friday night, the boys debated against Gregory Terrace in the Senior A, Year 9 and Year 8 competitions. The first round was a short-prep debate, with the theme of Art and the boys enjoyed the challenging topics presented. All three teams presented incredibly thoughtful arguments and rebutted strongly; however, we were unlucky not to get a win for this round. Our next round is this Friday, here at TGS against Brisbane State High School.
TGS Football 2023
Firstly, I’d like welcome all our new boys and their families to the “Football Family” here at TGS. If you are an active parent and wish to assist with the Football program then why not consider offering some of your time and experience to the Football Supporters' Group?
Football Supporters' Group Annual General Meeting – Wednesday, 15 February 5:15pm
The Football Supporters' Group Annual General Meeting will be conducted in the Bunya Room in The Pavilion. Parents and friends of the Football committee are now looking for new volunteers for the 2023 season. Please be a part of the Football process by being involved. If you wish to be a part of the group, but are unable to attend the AGM, please contact the Head of Football – Nigel Fanning on 0432 179 930 or n.fanning@twgs.qld.edu.au who will put you in touch with the Football Supporters' Group.
The Football Program 2023
The School has a strong and proud history of delivering a broad and accessible Football program which aims to cater for boys in the skill acquisition and performance phases of their junior development. Boys are encouraged to participate in both School and community football in order to fulfil their football dreams and goals. To succeed in football, boys will need to maintain significant contact with a ball throughout the year and should be exposed to both structured and non-structured play. Participating in FUTSAL during the off season is a great way to maintain fitness and improve skill acquisition.
Term 1 will see the emerging squad - who are previously "identified players" from Years 5 to 12, continue with their weights program as well as pre-season training under the direction of our 1st Team Coach, Mr Mike Mulvey. New boys may be invited to attend the emerging squad program once we have had time to assess their capacity to be a part of this group.
GPS Football holds a general weight training session which is open to all players outside of the emerging squad every Wednesday afternoon from 3:30pm – 4:30pm. All players are encouraged to be a part of this conditioning group as they build up towards the Term 2 GPS competition. Those players seeking to break into the emerging squad should prioritise their attendance at these general weight training sessions as their attendance is tracked and their progress monitored.
TGS Football Club Prep – Year 4
TGS FC is our Junior School affiliated Football Club which participates in the local Darling Downs community league as part of Football Australia’s Mini-Roos program. The Club enter teams from Prep to Year 4 into the Football Queensland competition during Terms 2 and 3. Mini-roos games are all about development; having fun and making new friends. TGS FC is unique in that the School provides coaches for teams who are all volunteers and keen to support your son's development. Parents with a football background may wish to join the coaching group this year. If this is something you would like to assist with, would you please contact the Head of Football, Nigel Fanning on 0432 179 930 as we are still a few coaches short.
Registrations for TSG FC have now opened on Play Football for all boys who are students in the Junior School. Registration is a requirement for boys playing in the local competition. Boys who play in the GPS competition do not register on Play Football. During your registration, you will be required to pay a Football Queensland Registration fee and a Football Australia fee. TGS FC does not charge a club fee and all coaching costs are covered by the School. It is anticipated that some pre-season training will commence during weeks 8/9 and 10 of Term 1. In Term 2, training occurs twice a week with matches played across the Toowoomba region on a Saturday morning.
TGS FC Junior School players are also encouraged to consider attending the Mini-World Cup in Lismore during the September School Holidays. This tournament is a fantastic way to end the football season and is highly recommended. Registrations for the Mini-world cup will open later in Term 1.

Many senior players from the School are usually selected for the prestigious Germany Football Tour which occurs in the following June/July school holidays (2024).
This year, many families took the time to make a holiday of the week by staying locally or at the coast which is approximately 25 minutes' drive. For more information about our annual end of season tournament, please visit the Lismore Joey's Mini World Cup website.
The School is seeking coaches and managers to assist with management and participation of teams at this year's events. If you can assist, please contact the Head of Football, Nigel Fanning, 0432 179 930.
TGS and the Football program has a proud history of conducting international tours.

Boarding News
From the Director of Boarding
Dear TGS Families,
The Boarding community is pleased to be back in residence at TGS. It was delightful to welcome our new and returning boarders in a ‘normal’ fashion this year. Our boarders have wasted no time in making themselves comfortable in their boarding houses and they are making the most of the outstanding facilities at their disposal.
Last week, the first boarders to arrive were our youngest. Corfe House opened on Sunday, 22 January to enable our newest boarders some extra time to settle into their routine. Assisted by the 2023 School Prefects, light work was made of moving in and it was reassuring for these young men to have some ‘big boys’ on hand to welcome them to Toowoomba Grammar.
Our boarders' recreation program evolved throughout 2022 and the first week did not disappoint our boys.
After a relaxed start to Australia Day in which many enjoyed the extra hour before breakfast, the afternoon was filled with an inter-House volleyball competition, a swim in the pool and the special treat of a ‘take-away’ dinner for all. This was followed on Sunday by 165 of our boarders venturing to Wet 'n' Wild on the Gold Coast. It was a great day with lots of fun, beautiful weather and it is a shared experience upon which lasting friendships were made.
The parents of our boarders were also busy last week. On Monday afternoon, our first Boarder Parents' Support Group meeting of the year was held. It was a fantastic turn out and I value the support they give to our boarders, boarding staff, and each other. I am personally looking forward to meeting many more boarding parents throughout 2023 as I participate in the TGS on Tour program which will take me throughout northern New South Wales, to Darwin in the Northern Territory, to Julia Creek, Longreach and Emerald in Central Queensland.
As I begin my second year at TGS, I am thankful to all members of the TGS community who have made me so welcome. We have an amazing group of boarding staff who dedicate themselves to looking after and educating the young men in their care. Indeed, throughout the entire community, the care and support that is shown for our boarders clearly demonstrates that we are a boarding school that values the diversity our boarders bring with them. This makes TGS Boarding a great program to be a part of for boarders, parents and staff alike.
2023 began with energy for our TGS Old Boys’ Association (TGSOBA).
It has been a pleasure to have been OBA President for the past two years and ensuring our Association and School continue to work most positively together as we support each other.
20 Year Reunion Cricket Game
Each year, the 1st XI Cricket side from 20 years ago reassembles and plays the School’s current 1st XI side with this year’s game held on Saturday, 21 January.
Mark Worth’s 20-Year (2003) side had a comprehensive win over the current boys, scoring 186 in their 40 overs and then bowling the “young ones” out for 122 in the 34th over, on what was a most difficult pitch to read and play on. Old heads however played the conditions better.
Year 12 student, Gautam Mahotra was the Peter McDougall Memorial Medal winner for 2023.
A highlight this year was the lunchtime crowd that gathered to watch the game. The School Cricket program finalised their training camps on Saturday, with the OBA providing lunch, allowing those in attendance to share a meal while enjoying watching play.
Reunion Volleyball Games
Another highlight, on the same day as the cricket reunion, the 2003 1st VI Volleyball side reassembled to play the School’s current 1st VI Volleyball side. This year also included a five-year reunion match, with the 2018 team taking on the current 1sts. The Old Boys went down in both matches, 3-0 in the 20-year game and a much closer loss, 3-2 in the five-year game.
We appreciate the support of the School and staff for these, and all our OBA events, these occasions meaning so much to the Old Boys who return with family and friends.
TGSOBA Annual General Meeting and Dinner with the Boarders
Our AGM will be held in Old Hall on Wednesday, 1 March 2023.
Our traditional “Dinner with the Boarders”
will happen prior to the AGM at 6:00pm. All Old Boys are invited to join us for this dinner. Fellowship and refreshments will continue at the close of the AGM.
OBA Information Evening
Old Boys will be extended an invitation to join with us for an informal occasion where they can meet current members of our Management Committee and Headmaster, Dr John Kinniburgh, and hear about what we do and the strong working relationship we have with the School. Refreshments and finger food will be provided. Invitations including the date and venue will be forwarded and all Old Boys are invited and welcome.
Generations Gathering
This event has been scheduled for Friday, 10 March commencing at 6:00pm in Old Hall. This gathering provides a wonderful opportunity for current boys who have an Old Boy father, grandfather or great grandfather, and their families, to gather and share the stories from the past while connecting with the present. Invitations will soon be sent out.
Year of the 3s Reunions
Coinciding with this year’s Grammar Downlands Weekend, 18-20 August, the OBA hosts reunions for Old Boys, most specifically from cohorts in multiples of ten years. This year, we feature reunion events for boys who were in Year 12 or would have finished in Year 12 in 2013, 2003, 1993, 1983, 1973,1963, 1953 and 1943.
We are always on the lookout for coordinators for these year-level groups so if you are interested, please let me know. We are beginning the planning process for this year’s events. If you have ideas on what might work for your cohort, please let me know.
Hosting Regional Reunions
The Headmaster is very keen to continue his interactions with Old Boys, specifically through regional Old Boys’ events. We have been hosting such events for some time with this year’s calendar already published. We are unable to be everywhere every year but trying to visit as many places as possible.
These events are most successful when we have a local Old Boy or Old Boys who can act as a contact and conduit for sharing information. The TGSOBA and School staff will undertake the administration and communication associated with the event, the local contact providing input such as suitable venue, suitable date, time and the like.
If you would like to see your local area host such an Old Boys’ reunion and would like to be our local contact can you please let Jennifer Bazley or me know. We would love to talk with you about what is possible in your community.
In the meantime, if anyone has any matters they would like to share or discuss please contact me on tgsoldboys@twgs.qld.edu.au I am keen to talk to you about our Association, what we do and how you can become involved.
On behalf of the TGSOBA, I would like to take the opportunity to wish all in the Grammar community the continual best for a most successful year.
Mark Creedon (1973-77)
TGSOBA President
TGSOBA presents 2022 Basketball Premiership Caps
At a special School Assembly yesterday, Thursday, 2 February our Association (represented by President, Mark Creedon and committee member, Nicholas Hess) presented the players in the 2022 Basketball 1st V Side with a Premiership Cap in recognition of their efforts and achievement of winning a GPS Premiership.
It has become a TGSOBA honoured tradition to make a presentation of a Premiership Cap to the players of a Premiership side as a recognition of their feat.
The Assembly was shown the earliest of these caps we still have, one that was presented to the players of the 1948 1st XV, one of the School’s most significant accomplishments in our Rugby history.
We told the boys that although this Premiership can appear as only a significant event for those currently involved with the School, it is also a most honoured moment for the TGS Old Boys.
There have been thousands of boys before them who have tread the courts, battled on the fields, clashed on the pitches, lapped the pools and strategically moved pieces. Thousands of boys have savoured playing with mates without experiencing a Premiership.
We hope we can present many more of these special mementos to teams in the future.
